The First 48: Everly

Everly was diagnosed with stage b-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia at 5 years old. She is in treatment, long term maintenance phase.

What’s one thing you wish you had known in those first 48 hours?

“That we would have to leave the state the same day as diagnosis to get treatment.”

What helped you the most in those first 48 hours?

“The sheer amount of information I had to take in kept me from really processing everything in the beginning.”

What is one moment in those first 48 hours that you’ll never forget?

“Walking into St. Jude’s for the first time down a hallway with all of the kids’ pictures up who didn’t have hair.”

If you could go back, what’s one thing you’d tell yourself?

“This is actually the easy part. The hard part happens once the newness wears off and you start processing. Prepare yourself for three years of treatment and the rollercoaster that comes with it.”
