Gold Ribbon Hero Dashiell C

Gold Ribbon Hero Dashiell C

“Reason this person is a Gold Ribbon Hero: On March 2, 2012 Dashiell Maccabee Codd was diagnosed with a cancerous liver tumor called Hepatoblastoma at 4yrs old. After multiple chemotherapies and surgery to remove the tumor at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, he fell into a high-risk category for recurrence so we coordinated his care with liver tumor specialists at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. After 3 months of treatment new tumors were found in his liver and he was immediately placed on the transplant list which he received 3 weeks later. After 7 weeks he got to go home to his brothers and sweet doggie. He was so happy, he did a somersault on the living room floor!

During his next visit a nodule was found in his right lung. The cancer had spread and he underwent surgery to remove it. But at his next monthly appointment new nodules were found in both lungs. The cancer was now believed to actually be the more aggressive, extremely rare Transitional Liver Cell Tumor. To be absolutely sure we tracked down leading authority on TLCT pathologist Dr. Arthur Zimmerman, Institute of Pathology, Emeritus Director, University of Bern, Switzerland. After reviewing Dashiell’s case history/pathology slides (free of charge), he confirmed it was this type of cancer, that there is no cure and diagnosis is terminal. To stave off the inevitable Dashiell underwent 10 rounds of radiation and an experimental chemo to no avail.

As with all of his treatments, Dashiell did not suffer. In fact, except for hair loss, he never endured the expected routine side-effects such as infection, mouth sores, nausea or fatigue. Even recovery from the all of the surgeries was without incident. Despite all our efforts, he succumbed to this disease on June 17, 2013 at 5 1/2 yrs old.

Dashiell had a blessed life, as sweet and blissful as any child could possibly dream — believing in Santa Claus, eating treats, cuddling Mama (Pam) and Daddy (Brian), playing with his brothers (Orson and Sumner) and hugging his doggie (Cider). He never knew one day of sorrow, neglect or abuse. He is deeply loved and all of his days were filled with pure happiness.

To ensure Dashiell’s journey was not in vain, his post-mortem tumors were donated to scientific research through UI Children’s Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the COG and SIOPEL. He is currently one of three worldwide confirmed cases of TLCT with data-banked bio-specimens. His legacy is honored as we advocate for childhood cancer awareness/projects/programs/organizations, better treatment options, advancement in higher cure rates and increased medical research funding.

Dashiell’s indomitable spirit lives on in the hearts of his family, friends and supporters.”

“Though much is taken, much
abides; and though
We are not now that strength
which in old days
Moved earth and Heaven, that
which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic
hearts,
Made weak by time and fate,
but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and
not to yield.”
Alfred Lord Tennyson, “Idylls of the King and a Selection of Poems” – Pamela C

Gold Ribbon Hero Ariadne S

“Reason this person is a Gold Ribbon Hero: Ari was 2 1/2 years old when she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor. Her sister Daniella had a wart in her foot that was bugging her so her mom made an appointment with their pediatrician. It was Ari’s turn to get checked, and the doctor noticed something in her belly. She had an ultrasound made where they were able to see a large mass in her left kidney. She was immediately sent to Primary Children’s Hospital for further care, blood tests, and an MRI. The day after the diagnosed was given. Wilms Tumor stage II. A week later she had a 5 hour surgery to remove the tumor and the kidney itself along with 12 lymph nodes negative in cancer. Gold Ribbon Hero Trenton K.

“Reason this person is a Gold Ribbon Hero: Trenton is my hero because he is the bravest, strongest, kindest person I’ve known. 3 1/2 years of treatment taking up the better part of your childhood is not something I would wish upon anyone. He has went through treatment with a wonderful attitude and fought very hard. He takes his very last pill on Halloween and has won his battle! It has been amazing to watch him rally for other children with cancer and want to spread awareness, share his story and raise money to help find a cure. He is my hero and my heart!” – Amanda K

Gold Ribbon Hero Ylija G

Reason this person is a Gold Ribbon Hero: Why Ylija Gomez is a Gold Ribbon Hero!
This little girl was like no other, her presence when she walked into a room was remarkable.  She loved every one she came in counter with and they too felt the same.  She was a happy child who joked about everything till her last breath.  Ylija Gomez is my niece. She was diagnosed with glioma blastoma brain stem cancer in 2010. I remember her going through the most difficult mornings of her life,  but she still managed to come out smiling. She was really close to her grandparents Mr.Domingo & Maria Campos of New Braunfels Tx. Domingo whom is my father died on May 13,2012. I remember him telling me one day that he asked God to take him before her cause he knew he couldn’t handle it. Her last couple of months all she could talk about was she couldn’t wait to see her Dad again aka her grandfather.  So on February 26th of 2013 she went to be with the Lord.  Though I feel a great sense of pain not being able to be their on this day, I am content knowing that she was not scared nor did she cry. All she worried about was her mommy… this little girl was a fighter till the end! She was amazing and had the most incredible personality. She was a beautiful person inside and out.  I want her to know that because she came into my life for a short period of time I am forever blessed and thankful.  I couldn’t imagine my life without her in it. Till this day I always remember to tell you 2 good morning and goodnight:) cause your the start of my everyday and no matter how my day goes your the last person I get to talk to which makes any day a million times better. I love and miss you ylija, Love Always Your Nena…” – Daniela C

Gold Ribbon Hero Creed W

Reason this person is a Gold Ribbon Hero: Creed Alexander Wilson was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma shortly after he turned just 1 year old. Creed is our hero because throughout all of the pain, the chemo, the surgeries, he still managed to keep that handsome smile on his face. He could always manage to make everyone laugh no matter the circumstances. He definitely had the attitude for the fight he was given. Creed stayed strong for all of us as long as he could, the treatments were unsuccessful and the cancer spread. He passed August 26th, 2016, just one day before his second birthday. Creed was the light of many of our lives. He inspired not only me, but so many others. He changed and impacted so many lives in just the short time he was given on this earth. After all, there is no footprint too small to leave an impact on this world that will last forever. Creed is forever in our hearts. Until we meet again. Love and miss you, Creed baby.” – Destiny B

Gold Ribbon Hero Mikayla O

Reason this person is a Gold Ribbon Hero: Mikayla is a six-year-old pediatric cancer survivor. last year on her second day of kindergarten we thought she had a stomach virus, a quick response from her mother led her to a pediatrician who was astute enough to realize that it was more than a virus. That day she ended up in surgery she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her journey started with school and ended up in the hospital that day.  MiKayla and her loving family went through a very long hard tough Journey this past year but we are happy to say today that Mikayla is cancer-free and her smile Shines on.  We are very thankful for the Wake Forest pediatric oncology medical team in all that they did for Mikayla” – Pamella G

Gold Ribbon Hero Alice Y

Reason this person is a Gold Ribbon Hero: She held a clipper challenge and raised over $4K which she as donated to Leukemia Texas.  She let a 6 year old cancer warrior shave her head for the money raised.  Working in a professional office environment and being a professional MMA fighter, Alice hasneen able to raise awareness in the local community.  Her kids middle school principal was unaware what Gold stood for and he now allows kids to wear gold during September instead of their normal school uniforms.

My kids and I have all watched people’s facial expressions from afar and give ugly looks at my wife.  We’ve also heard others talk about her as they didn’t know we were with her.  This judgement brings attention and sometimes people are respectful enough to ask why her heads shaved.  Perfect opportunity to make them aware.
