The First 48: Mateo

Mateo was diagnosed with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia at fifteen months old. He is in remission, undergoing Delayed Intensification II.

What’s one thing you wish you had known in those first 48 hours?

“The toll some of the treatment would have on his body. But our boy is resilient.”

What helped you the most in those first 48 hours?

“Our village. It includes our family, friends, and strangers. They all rallied together for us and keep him in their prayers.”

What’s is one moment in those first 48 hours that you’ll never forget?

“When his oncologist came into the room and told us his diagnosis. I remember siting with my husband on the sofa at the hospital, we were holding hands. His oncologist said “the bone marrow biopsy is back and it’s leukemia” I remember holding my breath and squeezing my husband’s hand harder.”

If you could go back, what’s one thing you’d tell yourself?

“That’s he’s a strong boy to continue to trust in God’s plan. And that’s it’s okay to cry. I honestly didn’t allow myself to cry those first few months because “I needed to be strong for him.””
