This September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we invite you to learn more about childhood cancer, spread awareness on social media, and support ACCO’s research and resource programs through donations or fundraising.
DONATE TODAYThe American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO) is a national nonprofit dedicated to securing federal, state, corporate, and private funding for childhood cancer research, while also serving as the largest provider of free educational support materials for children with cancer and their families in the U.S.
What About Kids Advocacy Update
Childhood cancer afflicts every demographic across the United States and around the world. With advancements in research, survival rates have increased, but childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children. The majority of those children who survive often face a lifetime of health complications from the diagnosis and toxic cancer treatments.
While adult cancer treatment has benefited from more than 200 new drugs over the last thirty years, only 7 new drugs have been approved by the FDA to specifically treat childhood cancer in the same time period. Additionally, almost all states across the U.S. appropriate funding for adult cancer research while the majority have no designated funding for childhood cancer research.
In order to reduce these disparities, ACCO works with state governments to ensure that childhood cancer language is included in state comprehensive cancer plans, and that states pass legislation to appropriate funding for childhood cancer research. Since 2018, through our “What About Kids?” advocacy program, $120 million in childhood cancer research funding has been secured across 7 states! But we’re not stopping there. With your support, we’re working toward an ambitious goal: $250 million for childhood cancer research by 2030. Together, we can accelerate innovative research, advance gentler, life-saving treatments, and give more children the chance to grow up cancer-free.
Donations also provide children with cancer and their families the informational resources needed to understand childhood cancer treatment in age-appropriate, easy-to-comprehend terminology. Education of even the littlest cancer patient is essential to understanding the difficult battle ahead. Tools like our medical play kits, which include our beloved mascot “Cozy”, give young patients the chance to “practice” medical procedures on their own terms—helping to ease fear and build confidence. Donations like yours keep ACCO’s mission alive, bridge the gap between what has been achieved and what still needs to be done and helps ACCO bring free resources to thousands of families every year and secure research funding for better treatments. Our goal is to secure state-based childhood cancer research funding in 25 states by 2030, and every single donation brings us closer.
