The First 48: Riley

Riley was diagnosed with precursor Cic-dux4 sarcoma at 2 months old. He has passed away.

What’s one thing you wish you had known in those first 48 hours?

“I wish I would have known how much my world was truly going to change. I always heard, even from the doctors, that children are better able to overcome a cancer diagnosis than an adult. I held onto that thought and kept repeating it to myself over and over but I never thought I would lose my son to cancer at 13 months old. I wish I would have known to stop thinking about the next step and just be more in the moment with Riley and hold him tighter.”

What helped you the most in those first 48 hours?

“Just simply being with Riley and how great of a medical team he had.”

What is one moment in those first 48 hours that you’ll never forget?

“How much of a blur and fog everything was. It’s was like all of a sudden I didn’t know or understand anything in life. I kept repeating the same questions just trying to make sense of everything but somehow my brain didn’t let me. I know I kept asking “are you sure?” This has to be a mistake.”

If you could go back, what’s one thing you’d tell yourself?

“Just be more in the moment and enjoy every minute that I am blessed with. Go take more videos and photos. Stop worrying about “what is next”. It’s ok to be terrible and scared but don’t let it get in the way of precious moments with Riley.”
